Elgeyo-Marakwet County Government has grown its own-source revenue over the past six years. Beginning with Kshs 61 million annual collections in 2013-14, its collection grew to kshs 129 million in the subsequent year. In 2015-16, its own-source revenue collection was kshs 128 million, which is a growth from the previous year. The growth pattern continued in 2016-17 with the county collecting Kshs 97 million and collecting kshs 105 million in 2017-18. In the last year of review 2018-19, its own-source revenue collection was kshs 142 million. Elgeyo-Marakwet county government own-source revenue has risen in nominal terms over the last six years.
Elgeyo-Marakwet County is collecting significantly below its estimated revenue potential. In 2018-19, the collections were only 33 per cent of the estimated potential of Kshs 425.9 million.

Elgeyo Marakwet’s OSR marginally financed the county budget in the last six years. In 2013-14 the OSR financed only 2 per cent of the county budget and increased to 4 per cent in 2014-15 and 2015-16. In 2016-17 OSR financing of the budget returned to 2 per cent and increased to 3 per cent in 2017-18 and 2018-19. Elgeyo-Marakwet is almost entirely dependent on national government allocations.
